         Mazatlán Sailing Partners

                             The structure of the deal

The boat:

Will be acquiring a sound, seaworthy 38 to 44-

footer. Any improvements necessary for safe

passage to Mazatlán will be made in California

and any possible cosmetics can be completed

in Mazatlán for a fraction of US prices.

For a small fraction of the cost of individually

owning and maintaining a nice sailboat ($5,500

purchase and $160 per month) you can have all

the fun and none of the grief. I have a 30-year

Mexican National friend who will look after

the boat when no one is aboard and make sure

it is secure, maintained, and provisioned, as necessary. Also, I will likely

spend a fair amount of time in Mazatlán so I will be around to watch the

boat as well.

Expect to have 12 partners/owners. That would give each owner two weeks a year on the boat during the preferable winter season, when it’s about 80

degrees during the day and the sky is almost always blue.

I thought you might have a hidden buccaneer lurking inside you. If this

strikes a chord, conjuring visions Kon Tiki, or Adventures in Paradise,

or a favorite Jimmy Buffett song, or wasting away in Margaritaville, or

Two Years Before the Mast, (or the book I wrote! – Mañana Doesn’t Mean Tomorrow) or any of that sort of magical stuff, let’s talk.

Send me a note and I’ll keep you posted.

Use of the boat...

While in waiting to take the boat to Mazatlán.

Each partner can use the boat within reason, up to 2 days at a time

with realistic notice. David will be spending time on the boat getting

it ready to head south. Any boat will have to be hauled and some work done – but we doubt anything major. However, we are planning on

having a small reserve for work to be done. David will supervise all

work done. David has done haul and  bottom work  and completely re-wired boats including installing inverters, battery systems, alternators, water makers, auto pilots, and more. Roberto was recently the supervisor at a boat yard in Mazatlán.

When in Mazatlán.

Each partner has two weeks per year on the boat - during the 6

month winter season. We will have a reservation schedule on

line for everyone and Roberto will be in Mazatlán to make sure

all goes well upon your arrival. The boat can also be used in the

summer "off season" as long as the weather is safe.

The boat will be maintained, outfitted and provisioned on a continual basis - except for food and such you will need to buy when you get to Mazatlán. Roberto will be available to assist with that if necessary,

for a reasonable fee.

We have talked with the marina manager and we are good to go when we bring a boat.

We will also buy a partnership vehicle. Likely a GEO Tracker or Jeep

or something like that. That way, each partner will have a vehicle when

in Mazatlán. If you’ve ever rented a car in Mexico, you know what an expensive hassle it is, and the huge credit card hold they demand.

Plus, having to find a taxi or take the bus everywhere can be

frustrating, inconvenient and inefficient.
