TOXINS, BE GONE!

According to the Center for Bioenvironmental Research, “since 1950, there have been over 70,000 new chemical compounds invented and dispersed into our environment, and only a fraction have been tested for human toxicity.”

National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) analyzed 2,983 chemicals used in personal care products and...

884 were found to be toxic.

Of these,

778 can cause acute toxicity,

146 can cause tumors,

218 can cause reproductive complications,

314 can cause biological mutation.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that 150 common household chemicals have been linked to allergies, birth defects, cancer, and psychological abnormalities.

A recent, new headline stated that Johnson and Johnson Baby Shampoo has a “new formula” that no longer contains formaldehyde. Sounds absurd, doesn’t it? But it’s true.

The idea that one’s home can be a healthy or unhealthy place to live is relatively recent. Terms such as “household toxins” and “indoor air pollution” have been coined within the last several years as the medical and scientific communities have begun to realize that household chemicals can have an adverse effect on our health.

Most people assume that if a product is on the market, it is safe to use. Many do not know that there are no government regulations or agencies that monitor what is put into home products. Many American products would not be allowed on store shelves in Germany or Japan because the ingredients are considered toxic.

Did you ever consider what’s in your laundry detergent?

What about that lotion you use every day during the winter?

The mascara you put on your eyes?

The foaming shaving cream you use daily?

It has been reported that women put as many as 515 synthetic chemicals on their bodies every day while men use hundreds as well - without ever knowing it - and, 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into our bodies! These include soaps, lotions, creams, cosmetics, shampoos, deodorants, and other common products.

According to Jessica Assaf: “At this point in time, regulations have not changed since 1938. In 1938, the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act was put into action and does not guarantee the safety of our products. [The act] does not require that cosmetic companies disclose their ingredients to the FDA, or any governmental entity, before they hit the shelves. Right now, we’re the human guinea pigs. Products are on the market, we use them, and if there are any issues that arise, whether that’s immediate allergic reactions or long-term health affects, then they are taken off the shelves.  Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay $72 million dollars in damages for the death of a woman from ovarian cancer that was caused by the talc in their baby powder. That’s where we’re at. All these products and all these chemicals are innocent until proven guilty.”

Some of the most common household toxins found in personal care products and household cleaners include:

  • Triclosan: An antibacterial agent that is chemically similar to the dioxin class of compounds. It is found in liquid soaps, toothpaste, cosmetics, kitchenware, and children’s toys. Dioxin is currently being studied as one of the main chemicals linked to ADD, ADHD, learning disabilities, and asthma.

  • Phthalates: Chemicals added to impact resilience and flexibility and to prolong the length of time a scented product maintains its fragrance. It is found in detergents, children’s toys, soap, shampoo, nail polish, hair spray, baby lotion, and all air fresheners

  • Phenol: It is an extremely caustic chemical that can be absorbed in any form. Skin contact can cause damage to liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. It is commonly found in many products, such as air fresheners, household cleaners, cough syrups, detergent, and sunscreen.

  • Formaldehyde (25 trade names to include Quaternium 15): A cheap preservative and filler found in 8 out of 10 of our over-the-counter household products including baby shampoo, mouthwash, hairspray, perfumes, and fabric softeners. It is known to cause cancer, kidney, and liver damage, and damage to the neurological connectors in the body.
